Alone in the Universe?

The idea of this is terrifying. Are we really destroying the only planet that is inhabited with sentient beings? A planet so amazing that it takes my breath away? I believe that everything is sentient, but then again I have differing opinions about most things. What are the odds of being alone in the universe?
