Living in an Alternate Reality

Someone recently said, ‘It’s like we’re living in an episode of the Simpsons.’ I didn’t watch many Simpson’s episodes but I get the reference. Frankly I think what’s happening in the United States is way worse than that. We have brought our country down to the lowest common denominator. We have a man unfit for office in the Presidency and the men and women supporting him in the Senate have allowed him to make a mockery of everything we used to stand for. He is at this moment sending unmarked cars to Portland, Oregon filled with federal agents to literally scoop up protesters. The excuse is they are destroying Federal property. Trouble is, just like so many other lies, this just isn’t true.

I know there have been a zillion articles written about the travesties this man has managed in the name of power, his love of despots, his total disregard of the law and the constitution and just plain simple decency, but I had to weigh in once again. This latest debacle in Portland made me realize just how dangerous this man really is. There are no checks on him. And if we don’t take back the Senate majority we will have another stalemate like the one we’ve had since Obama.

It’s kind of odd, but because I see Trump as a narcissist and a very sick individual, I feel less antipathy toward him than I do when it comes to the Republican held Senate. McConnell has held up nearly 300 bills, not even bothering to open them — bills sent over from the House addressing immigration reform, health care, voting rights — you name it. This is not a functioning government and hasn’t been for quite a while. And on top of it not functioning, Trump and his cronies are getting away with graft the likes of which we haven’t seen since the thirties. Meanwhile the poor in this country have no healthcare and no jobs. Amid a pandemic Trump has threatened to take away the last vestiges of the ACA. Do his supporters understand this? Many of them have pre-existing conditions…

The polls still have him in the high 30’s percentage wise. I ask myself daily how that could be possible. The CDC is now unable to talk to the people from the White House. Instead they are instructed to send info over— where, I’m sure, it will just be buried along with so many other truths. I’m also sure that they will be out in force on news networks. But how do you deal with a pandemic when the federal government denies its existence and/or severity and won’t provide the supplies necessary to deal with it? Or when governors say that mask wearing is optional? This thing could be around for a decade if we don’t get our sh** together. The utter stupidity of the fight about mask wearing is so juvenile to be ludicrous — but this is our country now. A bunch of bully boys running around with AK47’s, mask-less and yelling about their civil rights. If another country would allow me in, I’d be there…but now we are banned from everywhere, including Mexico.

I will leave you with one last thought. VOTE HIM AND THE REPUBLICANS OUT!!!

In my real life I’m a fantasy/mystery author. What I’ve written so far on Medium have been political opinion pieces. But that is changing!
