Our systems are failing. Why? Because they have morphed into unsustainable entities that are being backed by the Supreme Court. Remember Citizens’ United? It opened the floodgates to dark money flowing into our elections — coming from who knows where, and we can’t even trace it. How is that a good thing? I see it as the beginning of the end for the United States. Elections funded by Russia, greedy politicians up to their ears in corruption. This court we now have is even more right wing than the one who decided that case. Now they are poised to limit the EPA. They want to go backward on clean water, clean air at a time when global climate change threatens our very lives. They are Republican led and Republican run, the people who deny reality. Do any of these dudes have children or grandchildren? do they think they will live forever in a world of pollution? I just don’t get it.
One way to look at it that helps me, is to realize that this house of of cards is coming down. The farther we go with these policies the faster it will happen. The two party system is failing, our roads and bridges are failing, our supply chain is failing, we have mass shootings on a daily basis. People are living in their cars or on the streets. People can’t afford food. I could go on and on…The midterm elections will be the culmination of years of planning — voter repression and intimidation, gerrymandering. Partisan poll workers…
The people who look beyond this petty squabbling and division are saying that what is in play is the demise of everything we’ve always known. We have to become so divided that there is no going back before we find our way to unity. The ones who are denying reality are hanging on tooth and nail trying to keep the old in place. And guess what? Even though it seemed that this country was a good place, it never has been. We began with the systematic extermination of the tribes who occupied this land and went on from there with slavery. Democracy as an ideal sounds wonderful, but it takes men of good conscience to continue it. And we have very few of those running things in 2022. Instead we have liars and cheaters and greedy crazies who want it all for themselves as well as wanting to control women and deny minorities their rightful places in society. We have come full circle. And now it’s time to pay the piper.
It looks bad for the ones who care, but maybe what we think is bad is actually something very different. Perhaps this dismantling is exactly what we need to move into a new reality, one where we care about each other and the earth. It could take decades for the changes we need to come about, but it makes me feel a bit better to look at things in this way — to look beyond the politics of a failing democracy.
